Residential
Established in Essex in 1878, Bakers of Danbury works with private homeowners on the renovation, restoration and alteration of period properties, listed buildings and traditional buildings.
Our work ranges from individual repairs and restoration to extensions, complete renovations and barn conversions. We bring together the specialist skills needed to work with older buildings, while providing the construction expertise to manage the project as a principal contractor.
Our directly employed workforce includes bricklayers, plasterers, carpenters, joiners and stonemasons. We also work with specialist sub-contractors who we have worked with for many years
Our Conservation Skills
Working with older buildings often requires different materials, methods and skills from modern construction. Our conservation work includes:
- Lime plastering and rendering
- Lime mortar, repointing and traditional brickwork
- Timber frame repairs
- Stonemasonry and stone repairs
- Flint walling and repairs
- Structural repairs and underpinning
- Traditional roofing and leadwork
- Bespoke joinery, including timber windows and doors
These skills allow us to carry out both individual repairs and larger renovation and restoration projects where several traditional trades are required. Our in-house joinery workshop also enables us to produce bespoke windows, doors and other timber work to suit the existing building.
Listed Buildings and Period Properties
We carry out repairs, alterations and renovations to listed and period properties, working with the existing building and retaining original materials and features wherever possible.
Projects can range from repairing a timber frame or renewing lime plaster to substantial structural work, extensions and the complete renovation of a property. Where required, we work alongside architects, structural engineers and conservation specialists to deliver the work in accordance with listed building consent and the requirements of the project.
Barn Conversions
We undertake barn conversions and barn restoration projects, working with existing agricultural buildings and retaining original features such as timber frames, brickwork and roof structures.
As principal contractor, we manage the construction work from structural repairs and alterations through to plastering, joinery and finishing.
Home Extensions
We carry out extensions, alterations and renovations to period and traditional properties, taking account of the existing building and using appropriate materials and construction methods to integrate new work with the original property.
As principal contractor, we can manage the complete project, including structural work, traditional and general building trades, services and finishing.
