Project Overview

Bakers of Danbury carried out refurbishment and improvement works to the Breathing Apparatus Training Centre at Clacton Fire Station in Essex. The Clacton Fire Station training centre refurbishment was designed to enhance realistic building conditions within a smoke-filled environment.

The project was part of a fire service training investment programme to ensure the facility meets the requirements for modern training techniques and making improvements to the existing structure. A key aspect of the scheme was the addition of a pitched roof over half of the building to provide new loft space to increase crawl space for training exercises, together with concrete repairs and reinforcements.

Refurbishment and restoration building work

Removal of existing metal mesh partitions and doors on the ground floor and replacement with masonry partitions and new doors and frames.
Deep cleaning of all internal areas to remove oil and smoke residue.
Stripping back of the existing roof covering to expose the concrete and preparing it for the installation of a new Langley roofing system externally and a new floor finish where enclosed.
Construction of the new loft/crawl space approximately over half of the first floor, including a steel portal frame, masonry walls, timber rafters and concrete interlocking roof tiles.
Installation of roof ventilation panels.
Mechanical and electrical (M&E) alterations and upgrades to accommodate the new layout.

Outcome of the project

The internal layout was increased to create a high-level crawl space to replicate complex search and rescue conditions, and new fixtures and fittings were added to further improve the training environment.

These improvements have provided firefighters greater access to life-like training scenarios, enabling them to more effectively prepare for real-life emergency situations.
