Celebrating Heritage Restoration Success

Bakers of Danbury were proud to have been the main building contractor for the restoration of an Incorporating Mill at the Royal Gunpowder Mills. Now known as the Mill on the Mead, this Grade I listed building has been carefully restored and we were delighted to attend the grand opening on 19 March 2025 to celebrate its completion and the collaboration of all those involved.

A Grand Opening Event

The Mill on the Mead Grand Opening brought together stakeholders, funders, employees and partners who all played a key role in the success of the project. Guests enjoyed speeches from CEO Andrew Macdonald and honoured guest, the High Sheriff of Essex, as well as introducing a new learning programme and a tour of the restored site.

As specialists in heritage conservation and restoration, Bakers of Danbury ensured the historical integrity of the Mill on the Mead was preserved while incorporating modern solutions. Our expert team of craftsman, skilled tradesmen and project team worked hard to breath new life into this Grade I listed building on this important industrial site with its fascinating history.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the High Sheriff’s Award to Dr Geoff Hooper for valuable services to the community and recognising his dedication and contributions to the project, including his work on securing the National Heritage Memorial Fund grant.
