Progress Unveiled at St Mary’s Church Restoration Project

December 4, 2024 Rachel Finlay Comments Off

Members of St Mary’s Church were recently treated to a day of “Take a Look” tours to see firsthand the progress of the ambitious upgrade programme taking place at St Mary’s Church in Stebbing, Essex.

Led by the Bakers of Danbury project restoration team, the tour gave an insight into the background of the project, restoration progress to date, archaeological discoveries, and the next planned steps.

Transforming the Church's Interior

The project focuses on an interior upgrade, including a new and modern underfloor heating system, improved lighting, and better facilities with a new kitchen and disabled access. Central to this work is the complete excavation of the church floor, reducing its level significantly to allow for the installation of the new flooring system.

More than Restoration

Adrian Ward, Project Manager and Head of the Church Department, said:

It was a privilege to show the progress of this project to the members of St Mary’s Church and reveal some of the fascinating historical finds that have been discovered. This ambitious project is more than just a restoration.

With funding secured via the National Lottery Fund, it’s a project that means a great deal to the church and people of Stebbing, allowing the transformation of St Mary’s Church into a space that blends its rich history with modern functionality and will ensure the church is equipped to serve its community in the years to come.’
