Major Church Improvement Scheme at St Mary's Church, Essex
St Mary’s Church in Stebbing, Essex, a Grade I listed building, renowned for its exquisite stone rood screen, is undergoing a significant improvement scheme.
The project, funded primarily by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, is designed to modernise the facilities within the church and so improving the church’s interior for the future use of the whole community as well as preserving the historical fabric of the church.
The Project
The works involve:
Extensive floor excavation work to allow for a new underfloor heating system and breathable limecrete floor.
Modernised facilities including a new kitchen.
Adjustment to floor levels to provide ramped access for disabled wheel-chair users.
New lighting.
State of the art audio visual system.
Bespoke oak cabinetry, oak and glazed porch doors and repurposing of the original church pews.
Building Conservation Highlights
These include limecrete flooring system which avoids moisture retention issues caused by previous cement repairs, the use of recycled foam glass in the new floor system, restoration and protection of original features, handmade bricks to create the look of the original floor and the re-purposing of original materials such as the original parquet flooring and flooring bricks.
Archaeological Excavations
A fascinating part of this project are the archaeological excavations that are taking place by the Colchester Archaeological Trust. This has revealed fascinating finds from medieval artifacts, to tombs, medieval stained glass, and the possible foundations of the original church . All the discoveries will be respectfully preserved and documented and will provide a fascinating insight into the history of the church.
