Bakers of Danbury are undertaking a roof restoration scheme and thermal upgrade for Grade I Listed Holly Trees Museum. The work includes stripping the entire roof, repairing damaged timbers, re-tiling using salvaged original tiles, and improving the building’s energy efficiency with thermal upgrades.
Holly Trees Museum Roof Restoration: Preserving Colchester's Georgian Heritage
Key Features of the Restoration Project
Key aspects of the work undertaken at Holly Trees Museum are as follows:
Custom Scaffolding: Bakers worked alongside the scaffolding company to design a detailed scaffolding system with a tin hat. This ensured safety and accommodates the significant weight of the tiles being removed and reinstalled.
Roof Repairs: The roof has been stripped down to its timbers, which are carefully inspected for decay or damage. Original roof tiles are removed, assessed for reuse, and re-instated to maintain the building’s historical aesthetic.
Thermal Upgrades and Modern Efficiency: The project includes a thermal upgrade, with breathable insulation and new roofing lead installed to improve energy efficiency while respecting the building’s heritage.
Reinstating Historical Elements: Handmade bricks, some original and others specially produced by Bulmer Brick and Tile, will complete the restoration. These efforts ensure the roof retains its Georgian character while achieving modern standards of durability and efficiency.
Site Setup and Collaboration: Bakers established secure site fencing and welfare facilities before starting work. Once the roof was stripped, Bakers invited the client and architect to inspect the roof and agree the best approach before proceeding with leadwork, brickwork, and coping repairs.
