The nearly 190-year-old St John’s Church in the heart of Chelmsford began a new chapter this July with the formal reopening of the churchyard and its first ever Green Fair. The ceremony was led by the Venerable Jonathan Croucher, Archdeacon of Chelmsford, and welcomed a host of special guests including the Mayor, local councillors, and the area’s MP.

Restoring Heritage with Bakers of Danbury

The event marked the end of the building work and churchyard landscaping project, designed to make the church into a welcoming space for the local community. Following the formal opening, the church hosted its first-ever Green Fair, which was enjoyed by local residents enjoying the sunny weather, stalls and performances.

Building Works Completed

The buildings works carried out by Bakers of Danbury involved the demolition of the old boiler house and repairs to the North Transept. A new entrance was created into the church with a former window re-designed into an oak-framed glazed doorway with a new stone surround and opening onto a brand new York Stone patio area.

Further works involved renovating the red brick boundary wall, updating drainage systems, and installing a new water main.

“This space is for the people of Old Moulsham — a place where nature, history, and community meet,” said a church spokesperson. “We’ve watched with excitement as this vision has taken shape, and we’re delighted to welcome everyone into it.”

The day stood as a testament to the hard work and commitment from church volunteers and supporters.
