Bakers of Danbury carried out the restoration of a historic flint boundary wall between the grounds of Walden Castle and adjacent residential properties.
Walden Castle is a Norman site dating from around 1140, with the boundary wall believed to date from the 16th century. The castle and its boundary wall are protected due to their archaeological importance and so the works were carried out in accordance with Scheduled Monument Consent with the scope and methods agreed in consultation with the heritage architect and Historic England.
Works Programme
The scope of works was as follows:
Excavations were carried out by hand under archaeological supervision with archaeological evidence recorded and protected.
New footings to provide the foundations to support the rebuilt wall.
The existing wall was dismantled, with the original materials retained for re-use where possible.
Rebuild of the lower section with reinforcement to support the retained ground behind.
The flint wall was rebuilt using traditional materials and methods, involving lime mortar, flint and brick to match the original construction.
