Bakers of Danbury Shortlisted for NFB Awards 2026
Bakers of Danbury shortlisted for NFB Awards 2026
Bakers of Danbury has been shortlisted for a National Federation of Builders (NFB) 2026 Award for our restoration and conservation work at St Mary’s Church in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.
The Grade I listed church is one of the largest parish churches in Hertfordshire. The project combined significant conservation work with improvements to support the continued use of the building by its congregation and wider community.
Stonemasonry and flint conservation
A major part of the scheme was the restoration of four large Gothic tracery windows, each approximately 15ft by 8ft, alongside glazing repairs. Stonemasonry and flint conservation was also carried out to the North Aisle walls, including repairs and replacement of deteriorated clunch dressings, string courses, buttress tables, quoins and plinths.
Re-ordering of the church tower
The project also included the re-ordering of the tower, introducing new accessible facilities, storage and services while working sensitively within the historic fabric of the church.
Recognition for Heritage Conservation
We are delighted to see the project recognised by the NFB and to be shortlisted for the Remarkable Restoration and Renovation/Heritage and Conservation Project award. The nomination reflects the skill and hard work of our site team, craftspeople and everyone involved in delivering the project.
