New Build Construction of a Round Chapel in Essex

Project Overview

Bakers of Danbury were appointed to deliver the full construction and project management of a remarkable new build chapel at the Monastery of St John the Baptist in Essex. Designed as a traditional round chapel, the project involved a high level of craftsmanship, engineering and careful material selection to reflect the spiritual and architectural heritage of the monastery.

Construction details

The chapels’ structure was built using a steel frame. This modern framework was combined with 9-inch inner brickwork and a traditional 4-inch flint facing. The flint wall gave the chapel its historical look that was key to the design and vision of the project.

The domed roof was a complex programme where timber beams were cut, measured and templated individually to ensure a precise fit to create the dome shape. The interior ceiling finish was covered with expanded metal lath, then coated in pink gypsum plaster, providing a smooth, paint-ready surface. The plastered ceiling was prepared for a future decorative mural featuring gold leaf.

The main floor was block and beam which was raised in one area to distinguish the Sanctuary from the main chapel floor.

A series of arched windows were manufactured and installed positioned below the roof line within curved and arched lintels. This design floods the interior with natural light.

Adding to the uniqueness of the chapel are two copper domes measuring 1.5 meters high by 3 meters wide. There were formed from concrete, then clad in timber, and finally wrapped in copper sheeting. The copper was fitted around the curved surface.

Outcome

The project is an example in heritage-inspired new build construction and blending traditional materials such as flint, timber and copper with modern engineering techniques.
