Water Lane United Reformed Church is a Grade II Listed building with its congregation founded in 1662. The restoration work programme was a two-part project involving reordering and quinquennial repairs and introducing modern and energy efficient systems.
The works included installing underfloor heating powered by air source heat pumps, improving accessibility and creating a flexible space that supports both worship and wider community use.
Key Works: Quinquennial repair works
Insulating and redecorating the sanctuary ceiling
Overhauling rainwater drainage and clearing gutters
Refurbishing the west end stairwells and cellar
Key Works: New heating, flooring and modernisation
Removal of pews and flooring to make way for a new layout
Underfloor heating powered by air source heat pumps
Secondary glazing and loft insulation to improve energy efficiency
New flooring laid thoughout
New lighting and AV System to modernise the space
New kitchen and vestry area to improve the facilities
New front doors to the church building and glazed screen and doors to separate the lobby from the Sanctuary
Project Highlights: Co-ordination and craftsmanship
Our craftsmen and subcontractor partners very carefully stripped out the inside of the church, then progressively rebuilt it to a very high standard with quality finishes. Every stage was discussed and agreed with the architect and client. A large amount of coordination was needed to ensure heating, electrics and fit-out progressed efficiently and alongside the external works. We conducted hard hat progress tours for the congregation and local community.
