Bakers of Danbury’s onsite joinery workshop carries out traditional wood carving among many other skilled joinery services. Our bench joiner and wood carver, Norman Valentine hand carved a number of crocus detail for the reordering project at St Mary the Virgin, Saffron Walden, Essex.

The church reordering project involved Bakers’ joinery workshop manufacturing and installing an English Oak bespoke DDA and Dementia friendly wc, storage cupboards, children’s library and pew storage area, for which they hand carved a crocus detail to the top of every post installed. The reordering project was very detailed and complex with many hand carved designs.

To find out about the reordering works carried out by Bakers of Danbury to St Mary the Virgin, visit the St Mary the Virgin case study and watch the video below which features our bench joiner and wood carver, Norman Valentine wood carving intricate crocus detail by hand.

Founded over 140 years ago; our skills and expertise have been handed down through generations. Today we still benefit from having highly skilled craftsmen, some of whom have worked up through our apprenticeship scheme.

Work to St Mary’s Church was recently awarded the Diocese of Chelmsford, Design Award 2019 Highly Commended.
